A family of contour lines represents the site, 34th Street and 10th Avenue (NY, NY). The drawing progressions aim to find the necessary differences in the field of lines, which is pulled from given from GIS and 3D mapping elements. These differences were found through collage and drawing maneuvers that involved changing the directionality of the lines and breaking up the contour planes into parts with specific and grouped information. The excessive build-up of the lines implies an endless scaffolding within the urban landscape.

Each drawing progressively zooms into the site. The first in the series, and the largest in scope, uses historical maps of Manhattan to identify geographic features of the site. I focused on the lines of the underground rivers, meadows, and marshlands (currently unseen) to create lines of expansion on the site, potential moments where the land breaks. As these lines part, they reveal information regarding the old landscape around what is now Hudson Yards, the Highline, and Madison Square Garden.

Later drawings in the series take on an axonometric view, using a different mode to reveal the site's hidden lines. Both modes, however, work together to depict what cannot otherwise be seen through a literal interpretation.

All collages are 36”x36”
